Serving as a Bible Adventure and CIA listener isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it. God provides a way for seasoned, more mature, believers to come alongside public school students who generally have not been exposed to the truth of the Bible. For too many of the students who attend, this is their one and only exposure to spiritual things throughout the week. The faithfulness of the listeners to show up each week is what makes this program valuable. Some listeners choose to continue to show up well after the student has aged out of Bible Adventure and CIA.
For *John, his listener showed up in several ways, but it was the little things that he remembers. Through his relationship with his listener, he learned many Biblical truths, was provided a week of camp, and was pointed to truth often. Through middle school and high school, he began to look forward to birthday cards from her. He received encouraging notes and cards throughout the years that he cherishes. It was through his military enlistment that John lost contact with her.
He has had many life experiences that pulled him in several directions, but one relationship kept coming to mind, so 18 years later, he sought out to find his listener. Unfortunately, his listener has gone home to be with Jesus, but he was able to connect with her husband. He shared with him the lasting impact she has had on his life. John shared the cards from her that he had saved all these years. John shared that one thing she always taught him was to smile with intention because you never know how that smile will impact someone else. She showed him what it was to lead with grace and love. He is trying to follow her example in leaving this world better than she found it. This relationship clearly has left a lasting impact on John. We are praying that he will choose to begin a relationship with the One who makes an eternal impact.
