Recently during my Sunday school hour, a fellow classmate shared how a colleague of his at work noticed that biblical knowledge among today’s children is eroding. The colleague, in speaking to a group of children at the place where he worked (note that this was not at school), made an offhand reference to Adam and Eve.
Following the lesson time, one little girl came to the speaker and asked him, “Who is Adam? And who is this Eve lady?” The speaker found himself surprised that this girl would not know who Adam and Eve were.
In the Released Time Bible Program, we frequently encounter children who don’t know or understand biblical references that generations of Americans have grown up learning and knowing. In Released Time classes approximately 60% of the children are unchurched. Many of them have never held a Bible, let alone opened one. How sad that we are now seeing an upcoming generation with no connection to our rich Christian spiritual heritage. How heartbreaking to realize these children have no eternal hope.
That’s why providing biblical instruction to school children is more important now than ever. The majority of today’s parents no longer provide that spiritual teaching that brings eternal hope. With today’s children, we are often starting Bible instruction at the very beginning. It’s our great hope that as we teach the Bible to these children, they will in turn carry that knowledge home and begin to evangelize their parents.
Won’t you join us in praying for a movement among children that will bring revival to America? Won’t you consider volunteering in a Released Time program to help make that happen? Contact us for more information on volunteering at [email protected].
