THE PLAY’S THE THING

History encrusted by legend tells us that during the bubonic plague, the small German village of Oberammergau lost half its population, about 80 people. The survivors prayed for God’s protection and vowed to reenact the passion week every 10 years if God spared them. No one else died, and the play (with a few exceptions) has continued for almost 400 years.
Since learning about Oberammergau 50 years ago, I’ve wanted to attend, and was supposed to be there this weekend! But due to the pandemic, the play has been postponed until 2022. Maybe I’ll make it then! One never knows.
Disappointments are a part of life. We don’t always get what we want; our dreams don’t always come true. But we do know that God always has our best interest at heart. He uses our disappointments to strengthen us and shape us for His purposes.
Paul, who experienced many dashed hopes, wrote, “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…”. (Romans 8:28a) God doesn’t always change our circumstances, but He is always eager to change us – for the better. Even when we don’t understand, we know God is working all things for the good.
