We are entering the most wonderful time of the year! Contrary to popular belief, or the lyrics of a well-known Christmas carol, summer camping season is the most wonderful time of the year. It is a time to unplug, get outside and reconnect with our Creator. It is a time to form new friendships, and to make new memories. It is a time to begin a relationship with Jesus, or to grow in your relationship with Jesus. In a few short weeks, Joy El, a Christian Retreat Center in PA, will be filled with campers who have looked forward to returning, or to coming for the first time.
For some of these campers, they have worked hard over the past few years to earn a week of camp at no cost. Did somebody say a free week of camp? Throughout the school year, 3rd-8th grade students have the opportunity to attend Bible Adventure or Christians in Action (CIA). While there, they earn points for memorizing Scripture, explaining Bible verses and looking them up in the Bible. They can also recite the books of the Bible, the ten commandments, and explain the colors of the witness bracelet for extra points. As they earn points, they receive awards, with the top award (300 points earned) being a free week of camp. Since September of 2022, 48 students have earned a free week of camp. For Betty*, a 3rd year Bible Adventure participant and the oldest of five children, free camp was her goal. She has attended camp the past two summers, and several Bible Adventure weekends. However, she knew that if she didn’t earn the free week, she wouldn’t be going to camp this summer. With three weeks left of Bible Adventure, she knew she needed 28 points. She focused, studied and memorized God’s Word in order to obtain the prize. We pray as she grows, she will continue to focus, study and memorize God’s Word, while keeping her eye on the Prize.
