Every summer children come to camp with expectations. They expect to have fun, to spend time with friends, to be outdoors. Parents have different expectations. They expect their children to be well cared for, that they might try new things and that they will learn about Jesus.
I met a young camper last summer that was greatly impacted by her week of camp. Emily* knew before coming to camp that she would hear Bible lessons much like she had heard at Released Time. What she didn’t know was how that would change her life.
Early in the week, Emily and the other campers were given a clothespin to wear. The speaker that week told the campers that the clothespin represented the burden of sin that we carry with us when we do not have a relationship with Jesus. Emily clipped hers to her clothing like the others. She was very aware of that clothespin as she did her activities. It would get in her way and she would have to constantly readjust it.
As the week progressed and the speaker kept referring to the burden of sin, Emily began to put it all together. Just like the burden of sin can weigh you down and make life difficult, so did the clothespin she was wearing. She came to the realization that just like the clothespin when you have sin in your life it impacts all that you do and it makes you change the way you do things. It can even lead to more sin.
With this realization, she knew what she had to do. “I gave my heart to Jesus last night!” she told me as she was leaving camp. “I was so glad to get rid of that clothespin, but even gladder to get rid of my sin!”
Every summer, children like Emily begin relationships with Jesus! Even children who are churched or go to Released Time and have heard the Word of God, can suddenly put it all together in the different atmosphere of camp. When children hear solid Biblical instruction in terms they can understand, it can make a life-changing impact.
Do you know a child that needs to hear about Jesus? It has often been said that a week of summer camp is comparable to a year’s worth of Sunday school! Wouldn’t that be a great gift to give a child?
Now is the time to register children for a week than can change their life. You may register on-line, or call 717-369-4539. Learn about Summer Camp.
