Momentum Jr. High – November 17-19, 2023

Tyree Sterling

I grew up in a Christian home, I accepted Christ when I was 6 and was baptized when I was 7. I attended church camps and youth Bible studies where God really had an impact on my life. As I got older I desired being “liked by my friends” over being “loved by my Savior” and slowly I started to act out.

At age 18, my father died in a car accident and this rocked my world. I was mad at God and had a growing anger toward older white men. I turned to the world’s system which taught me how to dress, act, treat females and treat people… This was polar opposite to everything my faith in Christ taught me as a child. During this transition I turned my back on God and as a result hurt a lot of people in the process. BUT God still was walking toward me by surrounding me with people at work that totally changed my thinking on what it meant to be a Christian. Their challenging lifestyle and conversations gave me a thirst to want more of God.

A co-worker invited me to church and on March 29, 1998 God radically changed my life and this caused me to pursue the love relationship and discipleship process with Christ. A couple years later I served as a youth pastor for over 14 years. In that time I’ve been able to connect with students through many different ways:

  • Life-Skills Facilitator and National School Assembly Speaker, www.RockYourMic.com (since 2000)
  • Student Ministries Pastor (from 2002-2016)
  • Main stage emcee at Uprise Fest, www.UpriseFest.com (since 2005)
  • Chaplain and character coach for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), www.westernmdfca.org (since 2010)
  • Master Trainer with “Dare 2 Share Ministries”, www.Dare2Share.org (since 2015)
  • and a part of helping and assisting other ministries and conferences in their student ministry efforts.

In March of 2016 I realized that I was doing a lot GO GO GO and not a lot of PRAY PRAY PRAY. I needed a better grip on my relationship with Christ, my wife and kids. I took a sabbatical and during that time I decided to answer the ministry call to nationally assist leaders and students in discipleship THROUGH evangelism alongside of Dare 2 Share Ministries.

I’m inspired to run in my specific lane of ministry by the fuel provided from Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem (best friends), and in all Judea (friends) and Samaria (strangers), and to the end of the earth (the world).”

After recommitting my life to Christ, I’ve uncovered the promise of God being a “father to the fatherless,” “a friend that sticks closer than any brother” and a “present help in times of trouble.” Now as a husband and father of two, I look back and see how His hand was at work in my life the whole way through. I do what I do because:
(1) there are more Tyree’s out there that need to hear of the father that patiently waits
(2) students need trained on how to have this conversation
(3) adults need trained on how to create a Gospel Advancing Ministry for their local church

In His Grip,
Pastor Tyree Sterling
