“I’d say the program was a great success!”

Last week I dropped off a prescription at a local pharmacy and did some browsing while I awaited the medication. At one point, I needed assistance and was pleased that people both in front of the counter and behind it were quick to offer help. One particularly friendly face was a young man in a white jacket behind the counter.
When my name was called, I headed to the counter, where the friendly young man was ready to ring up the order. “I’m not sure if you remember me, but I used to be in the 4.12 Leadership Training Program,” he said.
I glanced at his nametag, read the name “Grant,” looked at his face, and then broke into a big smile, “Yes, I do remember you! Thanks for saying something! I would not have recognized you with your much more mature look!”
My order was somewhat complicated, so we chatted off and on for quite a bit. I enjoyed hearing the story of how he ended up in training to be a pharmacist. Grant then shared something that encouraged me even more.
“The mentoring program at camp was really helpful for me,” he said, commenting that he was not sure whether I still coordinated that. When I informed him that I still did, he continued, “Even though that was seven or eight years ago, I still get together with my mentor when I am home from school. He is always asking how he can pray for me. It was really helpful for me to have someone like him when I was a teenager—someone I could ask questions and know was there for me. So I’d say the program was a great success!”
When my complicated order was finally complete, Grant apologized for the delay. “Oh, I don’t mind a bit!” I assured him. “You just made my week. Thanks again for saying something.”
