Never underestimate the working power of God’s Word.
Asher (not his real name), a third grade Bible Adventure student, found it difficult to sit quietly for teaching time each week. In fact, it was a challenge to keep him in his chair during listening time because he wanted to roam around the room. His Listener, Valerie (not her real name), discovered that he needed one on one attention so he wouldn’t be a distraction to other students, rather than being in the small group setting which is typical of a BA Listening group. Making this change was a new beginning for Asher. He soon began to seek out his listener every week when he stepped off the bus and he even stayed seated across the table from her, though he still found it difficult to stay focused. Rather than engage in BA activities such as scripture memorization and looking up verses in the Bible, he preferred to draw pictures and talk about many things, while never discussing the lessons, or anything about God. Valerie knew he struggled with memorization and wasn’t sure he was listening to anything being taught.
Throughout the BA year, Asher heard the Christmas message, the Easter message, and the Gospel message along with many other lessons with no response to any of them. Valerie continued to encourage him and explained each lesson and memory verse in great detail every week, highlighting the parts that she hoped Asher would understand.
On the very last day of Bible Adventure this year, Asher got off the bus and ran to Valerie. The question he asked her was surprising; before he sat down, he asked Valerie to pray with him because he wanted to begin a relationship with Jesus! With tears in her eyes, she led him in prayer. Asher, who never seemed to be listening to a single word spoken in Bible Adventure, recognized that he was a sinner and in need of Jesus who would take away his sins and change his life.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
