After my first few weeks on staff with Joy El, I had a meeting with my supervisor. She asked me how things were going and what I thought of Joy El thus far. After I gave my lengthy answer, she exclaimed, “You need to write that for the blog! You need to write what Joy El looks like by someone with fresh eyes!” I told her that I would be more than happy to.
So, what does Joy El look like to someone with fresh eyes? It’s unlike any opportunity I have ever had before. That’s the first difference: This isn’t a “job,” but an incredible opportunity to not only serve the Lord in a capacity that uses my gifts and talents but affects everyone in a way that most “jobs” do not – an eternal way! I see opportunities to pour into people every day; Whether by words of encouragement, an act of kindness, or by using the gifts God gave me to fulfill my duties.
I see a passion like I have never seen before with a desire to see more souls won to the Lord. The most common conversations I hear are the topics of how to expand, how to grow, how to increase our numbers (the number of children. Soul goals!), and how to better help the children. Because of the shared passion, there is a unity that, again, I have never before experienced in a workplace. We are united, with a shared passion that surpasses anything I have ever witnessed. There are so many different roles and abilities – so many different gifts and talents – yet we are the very definition of a team as we come together daily to achieve a common goal.
I don’t get up in the morning thinking, “Oh, I have to go to work today,” but “Oh! I get to go to work and serve the Lord today!” This isn’t my complete answer to my supervisor, but an honest evaluation with fresh eyes of the incredible staff and volunteers I have the daily pleasure of serving with. What a privilege!
