With schooldays looking different this year, Bible Adventure was inevitably going to look different, too. There are many options of how kids are being taught during this time. Some schools are engaged in virtual learning, while others are in person but on a split schedule. Just as the schools have a plethora of ways they are conducting school, Bible Adventure has options as well.
The Northern York School District decided to try to make things more purposeful. They record videos of the worship, and lesson and then send the video home each week to the students. The students (and parents!) watch the video at their convenience. The listeners assigned to these students then contact the student at an agreed upon time to go over the lesson, listen to memory verses. This builds the intentional relationships Joy El values.
Covid is not stopping the Bible Adventure volunteers from connecting with students. In fact, some are really seeing some positives and taking advantage of situation. One particular volunteer says that the time he gets to spend with *Jay does not have a limit. He calls his student every Saturday morning and will spend up to an hour and a half on the phone with his student.
Not only is the relationship being built with Jay, but relationships are also being built with Jay’s parents. Jay’s parents have now joined the phone call asking questions and learning right along with their child. They look forward to his calls and have requested that he continues to call during the Christmas break from school. This kind of connection also opens the door for personal connections outside the student’s homes with the parents, socially distanced of course!
This listener is more enthused now than ever before. This is his 14th year serving in Bible Adventure and feels that he has more of an opportunity to answer questions, teach the students, and show them how to pray. He says, “It is better for the student, and better for the listener. I can actually listen. I enjoy this new way immensely. God is in everything and everywhere even Coronavirus.”
While not easy, and a bit more time consuming in the planning and executing of the video and contacts with the kids, it is working well for this team of volunteers and families. While there are many obstacles that the Bible Adventure and CIA staff and volunteers face, we don’t always know what to do, but we keep our eyes focused on Him (2 Chronicles 20:12). Thank you for your dedication to reaching more children for Jesus!
