I was frustrated. Many years ago my wife and I were serving the Lord in ministry at another location. We had several discouraging setbacks. We didn’t realize some of the problems that we inherited when we went to serve there. The tasks seemed overwhelming, and we didn’t know what we would do.
I remember calling my mentor. He was a wise man with a lot of previous ministry experience, about 25 years of understanding beyond me. I shared my heart. I probably complained a little. I looked for him to validate all of my issues and concerns and to commiserate with me.
But he did much better than that. Dave said to me, “Aaron, here is the only thing that you can do right now. You can pray and ask God this question. ‘What are you teaching me right now?’ And then as He reveals it to you, respond.”
It seemed so simple, and it really is. My perspective changed and I began to learn. I can’t change my circumstances. I can’t change anyone around me, but I can allow God to change me. The lesson that day has been with me ever since.
I’m not sure what you’re facing right now, but I do have a question for you: “What is God teaching you right now?”
God loves us so much, He gave us His Spirit to teach us. “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teachyou all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).
