Nancy* is a Released Time volunteer. She shared a story that reminded me of the importance of praying for our students.
The last two weeks, Nancy had substituted as her great niece, Jenny’*s, listener for Released Time. During their time together, she asked Jenny if she had ever asked Jesus to be a part of her life. She replied, “No” saying that “She wanted to do it by herself.” Despite her refusal, Nancy gave Jenny a salvation decision card to take with her and suggested she talk to her parents about it. Meanwhile, Nancy began praying that she would begin a desire to have a relationship with Jesus.
The following Sunday at church was a sharing Sunday. This means that the congregation will share their prayer requests or praises with everyone. Jenny’s father, Paul*, shared that twice the last week Jenny mentioned to him about “this card, Aunt Nancy gave me at Released Time” and she wanted him to help her with it.
He went on to say that Friday morning as they were rushing out the door he said to himself, “You know what? This is important.” He then helped Jenny begin a relationship with Jesus. He told the church how it was such a privilege to be able to share that experience with his daughter. He shared about Released Time and about the influence it had on Jenny.
It’s easy to become discouraged when a student says they are not interested in beginning a relationship with Jesus. This story reminded me though that instead of getting discouraged God works when we persevere in prayer (Luke 18:1).
