Time marches on… The Released Time year that began in September is past the halfway point. Every week that potential students choose to stay at school instead of bringing a signed parental permission are missed opportunities to hear the Good News of Jesus.
At one Released Time club I was promoting the opportunity to bring friends. I asked, “Do you have a friend who needs to hear about Jesus? I have forms for you to give to invite them.” A bold student asked what I would do if every student in their class signed up to attend. I smiled and agreed to a big surprise for everyone. Suddenly hands shot out from all directions asking for 2, 3 or 4 permission forms.
I was reminded of the Bible narrative found in II Kings 7. God’s people were under siege in Samaria. They were starving because of the Arameans. Outside the city were four lepers, also starving. At dusk, they decided to give themselves to the enemy in hopes of some food. Arriving at the camp, they found it abandoned. The Arameans had fled, leaving behind plenty of goodies. The lepers ate and drank and took treasures for themselves. This was Good News. Suddenly, they realized the Good News should be shared. They ran to Samaria and shared with the gatekeepers who shouted the news within the palace. The Israelites responded to the Good News and were saved.
Are we keeping the Good News to ourselves or sharing it?
