I recently had a one-on-one mentoring meeting with a student this summer named Matt. He is a first-year student who is serving this summer in the 4.12 Leadership training program. This one-on-one meeting was focused on scripture memory and how to use the verse pack system that we use at camp. Through this time, I explained how one goes through and memorizes scripture, moves verses that are memorized through the system of newer verses and review verses.
As we talked, he was very engaged and wanted to learn more about this system. He saw the value of memorizing scripture and making it a daily habit. He asked me, “How do you decide what verses to memorize?” I replied that at first it was verses that I found during my quiet times in the morning, but then eventually verses I have worked on over the past few years became chapters. His next question was, “What would be some that you recommend I memorize?” I gave him a few suggestions, Psalm 1 and Psalm 23, as well as a number of other chapters. What impressed me most was that he took out a journal and began writing these out to help to start memorizing.
It is great to see how the Lord provides a desire for us to memorize scripture and the opportunities to disciple others in knowing God’s Word!
